History Page As a kid in Perth in the late '50's and early '60's I had piano lessons for a few years which has given me a fair knowledge of music theory. However it was firstly saxaphone and then, after the "British Beat Invasion" of the mid '60's, the guitar that I wanted to play. I taught myself to play guitar and by my late teens had played in a host of pop and rock cover bands. Some of the bands from those days (1966-1974) include: Collectors Items, Blues Project, Equity, Depth, Full Sail, Train and Shelter. By the mid '70's however I had tired of the scene and virtually retired . When I started to play again in the early '90's it was mainly acoustic music Since then I have played mainly clubs, dances and festivals in bands such as Shiralee, Dingo's Breakfast, Windrift, Otters Brew and many other duos, trios etc. There was even a 2 year return to rock and roll in 2001 playing bass (and flute on "Ruby Tuesday") with the Rolling Stones tribute band Off My Cloud. HIGHLIGHTS Some highlights of this later period include: 1992 and 1994: Toodyay Folk Festival Songwriters Concert (Competition Final) 1993-2005: Nannup Music Festivals in a variety of acts. 1994-2005: Fairbridge Music Festival in a variety of acts 1996: Oz Concert Forrest Chase: with Brenda Conochie and Malaika 1999 and 2005: National Folk Festival Canberra: with Dingo's Breakfast 2002 Balingup Medieval Fayre: with Otters Brew PERSONNEL People involved with some of the bands mentioned above include the following. Apologies to those who I may have omitted. COLLECTORS ITEMS: Ric Boyd, Dave Quick, Ken Stivey, Bevan Min. BLUES PROJECT: Dave Lacey, Vince Lacey, Ken Stivey, Bevan Min. DEPTH: Bryan Connell, Trevor Jones, Dave Little, Tony Osborne, Doug Anderson. FULL SAIL: Terry Atterton, Denis James, Robert Taylor. TRAIN: Wayne Green, Denis James, Jeff Lally. SHIRALEE: Brenda Conochie, Jessie Rider, Dave Brown. DINGO'S BREAKFAST: Roger Montgomery, Toby Montgomery, Dave Ralph, John Angliss, Corrin Boyd, Meredith Higgins. WiINDRIFT/OTTERS BREW: Mandy Vincent, Liz Packwood, Steph Nichols, Brian Proudfoot. OFF MY CLOUD: Jon Mann, Paul Mooney, Jeff Lally, Ronnie Domp, Kerry Tyler, Ron Smeaton. I am still involved with Dingo's Breakfast and continue to play with them at festivals etc. To find out more about them go to their website (See My Favourite Websites) RECORDINGS After a friend Peter Foyster set up Grove Studios in the early '80's I became interested in recording and bought a humble 4 track Portastudio, drum machine, reverb unit etc By 1988 I had made my first commercial recording "Rails West 88" a cassette of trains sounds from throughout WA. It sold surprisingly well and the sounds have recently resurfaced, looped and layered, on CDs of background sounds I have made for model railway enthusiasts. In 1997 the Portastudio was used for the early sessions of Ian Conochie's CD "My Songs, My Life" but as the project grew it was transferred to the digital domain at Sun Studios with Andrew Gibson producing, freeing me to play guitar, bass and mandolin backings 1999/2000 saw Dingo's Breakfast record their CD "A Good Look 'Round" at Satellite Studios with Erik Kowarski producing. I played mandolin, dobro, electric guitar and synth. Mandy Vincent's CD "Beyond Millenium Past" was produced by Marcus Sturrock in 2001 in an idylic country setting. A whole group of my friends, including Kerry Tyler, Chris Woodward, Liz Packwood and guest star, renowned English folkie Jez Lowe, participated in the backings for this. I played mandolin , mandola and dulcimer (Kerry overdubbed the banjo). Mandy and I again joined forces in 2002 for Otters Brew (other members listed above) and combined some studio demos with live recordings to produce the CD "Laying the Ghost".(You can find out more about Mandy, now Mandy Breeze, at her website - see "My Favourite Websites". 2004 saw me in the producer's chair full time with a digital 8 track for Brenda Conochie's CD "Watersongs". This was recorded at Skink Studio, another bush setting. I played guitar, dobro, mandolin, mandola, dulcimer and bass ( I won't mention the banjo). 2004 also saw the trusty Portastudio again pressed into service to make nature field recordings for a CD-ROM entitled "Refresh - Refocus" CURRENT CD I have just completed a solo CD of original instrumentals entitled "Rainbow Reflections". It contains 11 original tunes inspired by the scenery in the Denmark WA area. Instruments used include: electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, mandola, dulcimer, robura, banjo (!), synth, electric bass, dobro, flute, whistle and melodica (!!) The CD is available from the Folk Trax and IndieCDs catalogues (See My Favourite Websites) FUTURE Several more projects are in the development stage with CDs of Appalachian music, '30's music and more originals (I might even sing) planned for the next few years. Pat Softly, a band with my son Corrin and his girlfriend Amber is currently preparing to perform mainly original material at various gigs throughout 2006 and to perhaps record a CD of that original material.
